Salt has a long and influential role in world history. For many countries, including both the Hawaiian and Japanese cultures, salt has been a key factor in spiritual, economic and social development. In the Shinto tradition, salt is used to repel negative energies,. Salt is most often used as morijio, a compound of the Japanese words for “pile” (mori) and “Salt” (shio, jio).
Purified salt is piled on a small dish and placed in the home, outside the door of a home or business or mixed with sand and sprinkled around the perimeter of the home. Salt is also placed outside of a restaurant or shop to attract customers. If salt is to be placed in front of the door of a home or business, be sure to place two dishes od salt, one on each side of the door. This salt has been consecrated in ritual and should be changed once a month if placed in a dish and used as morijio.
Placing salt in the house is highly recommended for those who have just moved into a new home, going through their Yakudoshi years or through challenging times.
